Consistency is Everything: How Molly Took Aim at an Archery World Record

15 June 2026

When most athletes win by being unpredictable, Molly Y (Year 10) succeeds by doing the exact same thing every single time, and she does it better than anyone in the world.

Molly is the current World Record holder in two archery disciplines, the Field and Hunter rounds.

“What I love most about archery is the demand for discipline and consistency. In many sports, athletes succeed by being unpredictable, changing strategies, or reacting to an opponent. Archery is the exact opposite, as success comes from doing the same thing every single time.”

Her archery journey began four years ago at a school camp. When the pandemic arrived and Molly was looking for a safe, socially distanced sport, she signed up for a beginner course alongside her dad and sister. From there, what started as a new hobby quickly became something much more serious.

Since then, Molly has built an extraordinary list of achievements at both national and international level. In 2025, she represented New Zealand at the Trans Tasman Challenge, achieving a Top 5 individual finish at the international youth competition. She was also selected for the New Zealand team for the 2026 World Archery World Field Championships in the Marked and Unmarked 3D events.

Her recent competition results include:

  • 1st Place U18 Compound Women (720 Ranking Round) and 3rd Place U21 Compound Women (Matchplay) at the 2026 Archery NZ Outdoor Target National Championships
  • 1st Place in the Field, Hunter and Animal rounds at the 2025 IFAA Asia-Pacific Regional Field Championships, securing the Overall U16 Barebow Recurve Women’s Title
  • 1st Place U21 Compound Women at the 2026 State Field Championships
  • 1st Place U21 Compound Women at the 2026 Warralong Cup
  • 3rd Place U18 Compound Women (900 Round) at the 2026 Archery Australia National Youth Championships

Alongside these achievements, Molly is the current:

  • World Field Archery Association World Record-holder for both the Field and Hunter rounds
  • Asia Pacific National Field Association Regional Record-holder for the Animal round
  • Archery New Zealand National Record-holder for the Junior Burton round

No room for error

“There is no room for error, and a single minor mistake can cost you a place on the podium,” she says. “Seeing the repetition pay off on the target makes it such a fun and rewarding sport.”
