Finding connection, confidence and community through Flying Fox
Among a group of 25 Year 11 students who recently participated in a transformative Flying Fox camp experience, two students have reflected on the impact the program had on them, sharing how it deepened their understanding of inclusion, leadership and the power of human connection.
Year 11 students Billee N and Saskia K recently volunteered as buddies at a Flying Fox camp, supporting participants while building friendships and creating memorable experiences together.
For Billee, the opportunity to step outside her comfort zone and make a genuine difference was what inspired her to apply.
What followed became one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences of her life.
From karaoke and Zumba to silent discos and pamper parties, Billee found joy in the everyday moments shared with her participant. Despite initial concerns about communication, she quickly discovered that connection extends far beyond words.
One of Billee's proudest moments came during the silent disco when her participant, initially hesitant to wear the headphones, eventually joined in the dancing.
"Knowing I had played a part in helping her feel comfortable enough to let loose like that was an incredible feeling."
A shift in perspective
For Saskia, the opportunity to help create meaningful experiences for others was what first drew her to the program.
"I felt impacted by the idea that I have the power to bring together people who don't get the everyday experiences that many of us take for granted. I think that's something really special about Flying Fox."
Saskia described the camp as an experience that transformed her understanding of disability and community.
Like Billee, Saskia faced challenges around communication but found that patience, observation and a willingness to learn helped her build confidence and understanding. One moment, in particular, remains with her.
"The greatest moment of joy was when my participant hugged me and rested her head on my shoulder. Seeing that connection form between us was incredibly rewarding."
What they took home
Both students reflected on how the experience strengthened important life skills including empathy, communication, confidence, resilience and leadership.
For Billee, the experience reshaped her understanding of leadership.
Saskia similarly found herself becoming more patient and open-minded.
Perhaps most importantly, both students gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of inclusion and belonging.
"Seeing how much it meant to participants to simply be celebrated and included made me realise how often those things are taken for granted," said Billee.
When asked whether they would recommend the Flying Fox program to other Ruyton students, both answered with an enthusiastic yes.
"It challenges you, changes you and leaves you with memories and lessons that stay with you," said Billee.
Their experiences are a powerful reminder that some of life's most meaningful lessons are learned through service, connection and the courage to step beyond our comfort zones.
