Powerful Learning

Performing Arts

With a reputation for outstanding academic results and co-curricular engagement, Performing Arts at Ruyton encourages participation and enjoyment through the two major study disciplines of Music and Drama.

Music

Music is offered across the School from Prep to Year 12 at Ruyton through individual tuition, classroom programs and participation in the co-curricular program. Delivering over 400 music lessons a week and with a rich array of bands, ensembles and choirs to join, girls are provided with a multitude of co-curricular opportunities to stimulate their creativity, passion and personal fulfilment. Performing at regular gala concerts, soirees and assemblies, students are also supported to enter local, state and national competitions and play in the local community and abroad with overseas tours frequently held to Europe, the USA and Canada. With participation and enjoyment of music and performing key objectives of the Department, our highly proficient 80-instrument full symphony orchestra and 150-voice open choir are credit to the strength of our music program and degree to which it is embraced by the student body.

Drama

Drama is offered across the Ruyton curriculum from Prep to Year 12, with elective units in the performance process, stage craft, acting for screen and musical theatre offered in Year 9 and 10, alongside acceleration into VCE for those wishing to undertake Unit 1 and 2 study in Year 10. Co-curricular opportunities such as Drama Club, Ruyton’s Got Talent, Senior School (Years 10-12) Theatre Club and other workshops occur at lunchtimes during the year and separate Drama Clubs run in both the Junior and Senior Schools. Empowering confidence and a sense of self through the development of public presentation and communication skills, Drama encourages students to collaborate, reflect, be creative and curious. Throughout the year, several performance opportunities are available to students across from Prep to Year 12. They include concerts, musicals, plays and ensemble showcase performances (VCE). The Years 9-12 Musical, Year 9 Play and Years 10-12 Senior School Play are held in conjunction with Trinity Grammar School, Kew.
