Mrs Sue Carr AM (Franklin, 1962) was named as one of Westpac’s ‘100 Women of Influence’ in 2016.The award recognises Australia’s next generation of outstanding women, those who will be the real game changers, acknowledging their leadership and resolute commitment to creating change across the fields of business, science, arts and social innovation. Sue was selected as one of only 12 in the category of Business Enterprise.

Founder of the Carr Design Group, in 2012 Sue was also presented with the prestigious IDEA Gold Medal, in recognition of a lifetime contribution to Australian design. Sue was brought up in a family with a strong scientific bias, and she spent her school years imagining a life filled with Bunsen burners and lab coats. But having enrolled at RMIT for applied chemistry, Sue found herself drawn to the fledgling Faculty of Interior Design. Here, the science of how we live and work was explored. It was new and different, and Sue found its appeal irresistible. Over the years Sue has employed a team of graduates who have contributed in significant ways to Australian design.

‘I feel strongly about the importance of encouraging the Australian designers of tomorrow to produce informed judgments about the crucial role of interior design in shaping and building functional yet beautiful interior environments that enhance our living, working and recreation spaces.’
