China Tour 2018

We learnt about Chinese culture and people, explored the history dating back more than 2,000 years, and enjoyed some magnificent sightseeing.

On Saturday 15 September at 0.05am, ten very excited Ruyton girls and two staff members set off on their journey to explore China. During the 14 days when we were in China, we had opportunities to visit the following cities:

  • Beijing - not only an ancient capital of six dynasties in Chinese history, but also the modern capital of the People’s Republic of China.
  • Xi’an - an ancient capital of dynasties and now an important city for the current economic policy, One Belt One Road.
  • Chengdu - home of the Chinese Panda.
  • Suzhou - one of the most beautiful cities in China, it is known as the ‘Oriental Venice’ and for its beautiful Chinese gardens and silk.
  • Shanghai – symbolises modern China.

We learnt about Chinese culture and people, explored the history dating back more than 2,000 years, and enjoyed some magnificent sightseeing. Among the places we visited, we saw a number of World Heritage Listed items including; the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors and the City Wall of Xi’an.

We had the opportunity to visit the Panda Research Foundation in Chengdu, where the girls learned about the life cycle of the panda and their living environment. We thank Mr Bao, father of Yolanda (Year 12), who took us on a guided tour of the Foundation and gave us all our own toy panda.

We all learnt a lot on tour and thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the contemporary and traditional Chinese culture and language, including the different dialects in Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai. The girls used their Chinese language skills when conversing with the host families, local students and the community. This was an unforgettable experience for us all.
