Year 9 and 10 Curriculum

Curriculum Requirements

The curriculum at Year 9 and 10 is structured so that students fulfil Government requirements. The Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, History (one semester each year) and Science are offered as non-elective (core) subjects and, in some cases, electives. The Learning Areas of the Arts, Languages and Humanities are offered as electives.

Students in Years 9 are required to continue to study the Language Other than English undertaken in Years 7 and 8 , unless invited to participate in the Tutorial Programme.

Students in Years 10 are required to continue to study the Language Other than English undertaken in Year 9 or a one year course in Spanish Language and Culture, unless invited to participate in the Tutorial Programme.

The languages offered at each level are:

Year 9: Chinese (Mandarin), Chinese Accelerated (Mandarin), French, French Accelerated

Year 10: Chinese (Mandarin), Chinese Accelerated - VCE Chinese (Mandarin) Units 1 and 2, French, French Accelerated - VCE French Units 1 and 2, Spanish Language and Culture

Tutorial

The Tutorial class focusing on improvement in literacy skills  continues in Years 9 and 10.

Elective Subjects 

In Year 9 and in Year 10:

  • Electives are one Semester in length
  • There are two Elective Blocks of eight periods per cycle in each Semester.
  • VCE electives may only be chosen by students who will be in Year 10. VCE subjects count as 2 electives (1 per semester).
  • Year 9 and Year 10 students will study the required Australian Curriculum History as one of their elective each year
  • Students choosing electives for Year 10 are required to choose electives that they did not study in Year 9.
  • The viability of any subject will be determined by the number of students choosing it.
  • Students will be notified about which confirmed electives they will be studying as soon as possible.
  • Any requests for subsequent changes in chosen electives will require a letter from parents.
