Year 9 and 10 Think Like a Doctor

Year 9 and 10 Think Like a Doctor

The tours gave us a new insight into medical research and just how many opportunities there are for women to work in the medical field.

On Thursday 7 March, students undertaking the Year 9 and 10 Think Like a Doctor elective, set off to the city to attend a tour of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and the Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy at the University of Melbourne. At the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, one group of our girls were taken on a tour of the medical research laboratory where cancer cells are being grown and studied. The other group visited a structural biology laboratory where they saw the creation of crystallised proteins that will be used in various medicines to treat autoimmune diseases. We were all amazed by the progress of medical research and how rewarding a career in science can be.

After lunch we visited the University of Melbourne, where we took a tour around the Museum of Anatomy, one of Australia’s most extensive collections of real human tissue specimens and anatomical models. The tour offered us a unique insight into the wonders of the human body. From dissected hands to preserved lungs, the museum had everything. It was eye-opening to see the different parts of the human anatomy.

The tours gave us a new insight into medical research and just how many opportunities there are for women to work in the medical field. We thank Mr Chockalingam for organising the excursion and Miss Cornehls and Mrs Smibert for accompanying us.
