Walk for Women

Walk for Women

Even in today’s society, gender inequality remains deeply entrenched, as women lack access to decent work, face occupational segregation and experience gender wage gaps. All over the world they are too often denied access to basic education and health care on top of the suffering, violence and discrimination they experience.

As part of International Women’s Day, on Friday 17 March, the Annual Walk for Women was held at Melbourne Grammar School, where 15 Melbourne private schools came together in a united front to attempt to redress this ubiquitous inequality. This occasion not only helped raise awareness of gender inequality, but also contributed valuable funds towards the United Nation’s Women’s organisation. Ruyton had over 114 girls participating from Years 7 to 12, walking around the 4km Tan wearing a touch of bright purple, the colour for International Women’s Day.

There was a jazz band playing before the event for entertainment. The walk began at around 4.30pm with Ms Hoskins leading the way with the banner. It was also a very sociable occasion, as we met up with girls and boys from other schools. Following the walk, there was a sausage sizzle and cake stall.

In total $7,200 was raised towards this worthy cause. This would not have been possible without the generous support of Driver Bus Lines, which donated two buses and made our transport to the event possible. Our thanks also go to Mr Upperton for his hard work and dedication helping to organise this event.
