Year 9 to 12 GSV AFL Semi Final - Friday 2 June

An impressive unbeaten season by the Years 9 to 12 AFL football ‘A’ squad saw Ruyton named Zone winners. For the first time since this sport was introduced to GSV in 2010, a Ruyton team was to play in a GSV Semi Final. Drawn to play MLC, this match was always going to be tough, but with a bus load of support and a lot of energy the girls arrived at home ground Trinity Bulleen, ready to take them on. Knowing the history, talent and depth of our opposition the girls were nervous and in the first quarter failed to play our game, seeing MLC jump to a three goal lead. The Ruyton girls’ resilience and self-belief kicked in and they started to move the ball and display to our supporters just what they were capable of. There were some impressive efforts all over the ground, but in particular, by the team’s fearless leader and Captain, Annabel B, with some penetrating kicks out of defence and some great run and carry. The outstanding and determined efforts of Sammi M were also a highlight, at one point, having four attempts at a play before finally getting the ball and clearing it to our forward line. Our only goal in the game came from a quick handball from Genevieve L to an even quicker thinking Bella A, who delivered an accurate kick. The girls never gave up and were competitive beyond fault throughout the entire game. Well done on a terrific effort, it bodes well for the future. Well done also to Ruyton AFL players in all grades and thank you to the supporters who attended matches throughout the season.
