Supporting the Vanuatu Project

Supporting the Vanuatu Project

Imagine missing up to a week of school every month just because you’re having your period. Add to this that you are told you are unhygienic and can make other people sick, which forces you to be quarantined. This is the reality hundreds of girls face in Vanuatu who don’t have access to sanitary products, nor a proper understanding of what is happening to their bodies. CARE Australia is the international aid and development organisation that works around the globe to save lives and defeat poverty. This year their main project is to provide education and sanitary products to the girls and communities in Vanuatu, with their campaign entitled `No girl should miss school. Period.’ As young girls growing into women we are privileged not to have this as a concern, and probably find it hard to even imagine what it feels like. The least we could do was to support CARE Australia in their efforts to help the girls of Vanuatu.

Last Tuesday lunchtime the Community Service Committee opened a few food stalls and held an outdoor concert that celebrated what it is to be a woman, with all proceeds going to this amazing cause. It was only for one small lunchtime, and we set ourselves a target of $500, which we well and truly exceeded, raising at total of $1,166.65. This is testament to the strength of our student community and their commitment to a charity so relevant and worthy of our support.
