Student Forum with Rosie Batty

Last Wednesday, girls from Years 10, 11 and 12 were fortunate to hear from domestic violence campaigner and 2015 Australian of the Year, Ms Rosie Batty. As a victim of family violence herself, Rosie told the story of her journey to combat this, following the tragic death of her son Luke at the hands of his father. Her moving speech highlighted that violence towards any person, man, woman or child, can never be justified, and further contended in a powerful statement that ‘family violence may happen behind closed doors, but it needs to be brought out from these shadows and into broad daylight’. A small group of students were also given the opportunity to attend an afternoon tea with Rosie, who delved deeper into the need for greater support of those subjected to domestic violence and encouraged the growth of awareness surrounding the widespread issue that touches one in eleven people annually.
