Largeenough forexcellence; small enough to care
What isyourpersonal definitionof success? I havecontemplated thisquestion, askedof
meover theholidaybreak, onmanyoccasionsduring thisyear. At thefirst Senior School
Assemblyof 2014wecongratulatedBettyXiong,Dux2013, onheroutstandingeffortand
achievementand recognisedGillian Lim inYear 11 as the recipientof theCatherineWoods
Scholarship.On thisoccasionBetty sharedwith thegirls someofher study tipsandpersonal
experiencesofVCE. I am sure thateverygirlwalkedaway from thisAssemblywithwords
ofwisdomandmarvelledatBetty’shumbleandgroundedattitude.More importantly,
weall clearly saw that successwas somuchmore thananumber. Bettymade real the
Ruytonexperience, clearlydemonstrating thatan individual striving toachieveherbestby
immersingherself in theopportunitiesavailable toherandbalancingher lifeappropriately
is true success. Thishasbeendemonstratedby somanyofour 2013Year 12 students,whose
individual journeys reflect theirachievementofpersonal goalsandpersonal bests,while
enjoying theexperiencesandnumerousopportunities tobelong. The strengthofRuyton
is found in thehigh level of contributionandparticipationof everyRuytongirl. It is this
characteristic thatgivesour School thevitalityand thecultureofpersonal excellence that
wehavecome toknowand respect. Ruyton is trulyan immersionprogramme in itsown
right,whereour students immerse themselves in richand supportiveculture,where
individual endeavourand improvementarevaluedhighly. This isourdefinitionof success.
AsaSchool communitywecongratulateour 2013Year 12 studentson their excellentVCE
results. TheiroutstandingeffortsplacedRuyton in the top20 schools in the state for 2013.
46%of studentsattainedanATAR scoregreater than90. BettyXiong, JanetDavey,Michelle
Hu, ShuXiWangand LaurenYipall achievedATAR scoresover99whichaccounts for8%of
our student cohort. Perfect study scoresof 50wereachievedby JanetDavey (Psychology),
Shalini Ponnampalam (HealthandHumanDevelopment), CourtneyPowell (Further
Mathematics), BettyXiong (English),DeanneXu (FurtherMathematics) andDaniel Beratis,
Trinity (Media). Congratulations toeachof these studentson theiroutstanding
achievements. All ofourgirls receiveda tertiaryofferand60% received theirfirstpreference.
These results reflect the talentandhardworkofourgirlsbutalso thequality teaching,
counsellingprocesses, support from familiesand the focusondevelopmentofourgirlsas
independent youngwomen.Wecongratulateall ofour 2013Year 12 studentsand thank
them for their valuablecontribution to theRuytonculture.Wewish themevery success for
the futureand look forward to following theirprogress.
In the Januarybreak,whileMelbournewas caught in thegripof sweltering temperatures,
MrsDanyangMcAuliffeand I ventured to sub-zero temperatures inNanjing.Mr Stephen Lee,
formerHeadofChineseatCamberwellGrammar School, isnowworkingat theNanjing
Foreign LanguageSchool XianlinCampusand throughhis contactwithRuytonwehavebeen
investigating thepossibilityof establishingaYear 10ChinaExchangeopportunity forour
girlswithhis school.Duringour time inNanjingwewereable tovisitmanycultural and
historic sitesand to see the school inoperation. The school isexperienced inoffering
exchangeprogrammeswithanumberof schoolsacross theworldandprovidesexcellent
opportunities for language learning, aswell asgood supportwithEnglish-speaking staff
and students.We look forward toourfirst studentexchangebetween the two schools.
Therewasagreatdeal of activity in theSchool duringfirst termasweprepared for the
RuytonFairandalsocommenced thebuildingprogramme.Whata success theFairwas!
Itwasa terrificexampleofwhata strongand thrivingcommunitycandowheneveryone
works together. Fora full reportplease seepage 16.Workhas commencedonSouthHouse,
as thiswell-loved spaceonceagainbecomesaplaceof student learning. SouthHousewill
be thehome toall ofourYear4 students fora special year in their educational journey,
focusedondiscovering theirplace in thecommunityasacontributingcitizen.We look
forward to thisexcitingnew learning spacebeing ready forourgirls inTerm2.
TheMargaretMcRaebuilding, a two storeybuilding thathousedourYear 7sand theScience
facilities,wasdemolishedduring the termbreak.Workwill sooncommence tobuild the
newMcRaeCentre, home tonewScience facilities, aDramaandevent spaceanddedicated
Year 7and8 learningareas.Weareparticularlyexcitedabout theopportunities thisnew
centrepresentsourgirls for learning, tofire their imaginationsandchallenge theirminds.
Our studentsand staffhavehad significant input into thisbuilding, aswehaveaimed to
provide thebestpossible learning spaces forgirlsandyoungwomen.We look forward to
keepingyouup todatewith theprogressof thesebuildingdevelopments, clearly focused
onprovidingourgirlswith theopportunity toachieve success.
