Expanding Horizons Programme
Ruyton’s Expanding Horizons Programme recognises the need to provide students with challenges that extend beyond the classroom. As part of a balanced education, we’ve created a series of exciting and challenging outdoor activities that stimulate students to explore and expand their horizons.
These activities complement our Human Studies programme and enable girls to learn valuable skills, gain independence and work effectively in teams.
The focus of our programme is the development of an awareness of self, others and the environment. At the same time, the extensive range of activities contribute to the important development of students’ physical and recreational skills.
All girls at Ruyton participate in the programme from Year 3 to Year 10. Activities are designed to encompass five key themes. Progression through our programme prepares students for their leadership responsibilities at Years 11 and 12. Leadership days at VCE levels consolidate the personal and interpersonal qualities strengthened through the years at Ruyton.

Outdoor Activity
This involves developing a range of skills to safely and competently negotiate activities in the outdoors. Participation in a wide number of pursuits provides stimulus for learning within the other four themes.
Environmental Awareness
Increasing understanding of the natural world and our place as responsible citizens within it is the focus of this theme.
Cultural Awareness
Students learn about many cultures and grow in understanding of different communities. They become more aware of different beliefs and values within Australia and overseas.
Personal and Interpersonal Development
Personal awareness and growth is fostered. Girls embark on a journey of discovery that aims to develop a sense of self understanding, and how to maximize personal potential. This theme also focuses on developing skills involved in building relationships and operating as an effective member of a group. These include decision making, conflict management and leadership.
