Public Speaking

Debating and Public Speaking at Ruyton are flourishing activities which foster self-confidence, promote quick thinking and increase awareness of current issues.

Girls begin to acquire debating skills in the Junior School and have many enjoyable opportunities to practise and develop their techniques. In the Senior School, House Debating is a popular competition. From Year 8 girls can take part in interschool competition through the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV). Ruyton teams have been a significant presence at the DAV finals in the past five years, debating such diverse topics as "That women need men like fish need bicycles" and "That we should legalise euthanasia".

A wide range of public speaking activities also take place including local contests, public readings, specialist coaching sessions and our own competition, The Alan Paterson Prize for Public Speaking.

Girls in Years 5 and 6 participate enthusiastically in public speaking as part of the English Programme. Opportunities to discuss issues concerning speech-making are provided by invited guest speakers. In the classrooms, girls are taught the structure of speech writing and delivery. The girls have their speeches heard in the supportive environment of their classrooms, and then the school community looks forward to participating in a Showcase Evening held in Royce Theatre.
