I have nothing but admiration for any student who chooses to debate for Ruyton, as the task of arguing the merits of a topic in front of an audience is certainly a daunting prospect. My admiration is further elevated by the fact that Hawthorn is perhaps the most competitive of regions in which to debate, as we find ourselves competing against schools such as Scotch College, Xavier, Lauriston and St Catherine’s.
While the quality of our opposition represents a clear challenge, it is also a wonderful opportunity for each debater to raise her personal bar and strive to excel. It is hard but rewarding work.
Each year the Debaters Association of Victoria holds the Swannie Awards to acknowledge the best performing speakers in the Schools Competition. It is certainly a great and also a rare honour to receive this award, as there are so many talented students participating in the statewide competition.
In 2014, Claire S of Year 10 has received such an accolade and we are all very proud of her achievement. Claire is a humble, diligent, conscientious and remarkable debater who has always represented the School with pride.
On behalf of Ruyton and the 2014 Ruyton debating teams, I’d like to congratulate Claire for her outstanding achievement.
