When you cast your mind back to your own education at school, I am sure that some of your most memorable moments will be when you were involved in hands-on activities, collaborating with your peers and learning by doing. In celebration of Science Week, 17 to 21 August, we are curating a range of hands-on experiences to ignite your daughter’s passion for Science and Technology. The theme for Science Week this year is ‘Making Waves: The Science of Light’.
Mr Ross Baker, Mr Julian Mutton, Mr Brett Moller and I have been planning for this week with great enthusiasm. We were motivated by Super Awesome Sylvia’s visit last term and have decided to build on this by creating opportunities for every year level to be engaged in making, which will culminate in a Maker Faire on Friday afternoon in the Centre for Creativity.
The girls will be encouraged to explore independent thought, to design, create and tinker, engaging them in a range of projects and pursuits across the week. Lunchtimes throughout the week will provide an additional time for the girls to experiment and play with their own ideas and the range of ‘tech gadgets’ that Mr Mutton and Mr Moller have been enthusiastically introducing to the girls. We trust that the girls will have fun and develop their making skills with the open-ended creative projects that will be available.
It will be exciting to see the Maker Movement in action, as it injects further creativity and passion into our STEM programme. All parents and members of the community are invited to attend the Maker Faire on Friday 21 August where the girls will share their learning.
