At Ruyton Early Learning the children have had the opportunity to become more acquainted with the Olympic Games. The message of friendship and people coming from across the world to play and work together is one to which the children can relate. The Family Flags depicting each child’s family culture are proudly displayed in our foyer. The flags symbolise our message of coming together in Early Learning to play and work harmoniously. Thank you to our Early Learning families for creating these special flags.
During morning meetings discussions have taken place on a range of Olympic related facts, history and proceedings. Many children had seen parts of the opening ceremony and events with their families. As they continued watching the games at home they gained more knowledge of the different types of events, which led them to practising some of their physical skills in relation to rhythmic gymnastics, basketball and more. It has been marvelous to observe the children pretending to compete in their games with so much enthusiasm and determination.
The games have also inspired diverse learning experiences. One morning in Co-Ed Pre Prep a group of children had an interesting mathematics lesson. They watched clips of the Olympic Games and were captivated by the Australian Boomers playing against USA in the basketball event. They cheered for the Boomers as they kept a close eye on the scores. The scores were repeatedly counted to work out what the difference was in the results. The children did a lot of cross checking to ensure the scoring was right!
The children in all Early Learning groups have shown an interest in the Olympic Rings and have been replicating them through various art modes. They used the Olympic Ring colours to make the five interlocking circles, with some incorporating other items of interest. The Olympic Games has also provided the children with a deeper understanding of our global culture and enabled them to see the connection we have as Australians. The message of friendship has been actively received by our children.
