How fortunate are we as Melbournians to live in a city designated as a UNESCO City of Literature: a city that so actively celebrates our strong literary culture? Beyond that, how privileged we are to be part of a School community that recognises the value of books and reading, encouraging each student to develop a true love of literature? In light of this, it is pleasing to see our students not only attend the Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) but also to have a student take an active role as a MWF presenter.

Director, Library Resource Centre
On Monday 25 August, Vinhara G, Mrs Purcell and I visited Federation Square to attend the Melbourne Writers Festival. Over the course of the day, we saw a variety of presentations by well-known authors, including Jackie French, Kirsty Murray and Tim Cope. In the afternoon, Vinhara, as a Youth Judge for the Inky Awards, gave a presentation of the shortlisted books for 2014 in collaboration with two other judges. With an audience of around 300 people, she spoke with eloquence and confidence. The day was a great success for all involved, and Ruyton was well represented.
