With the recent warm weather our children had increased opportunities to extend their interest in water investigations. They played in the beach area with the tumbling water fountain, watered the garden beds, washed ‘babies’ (dolls) and participated in outdoor learning. Indoors the children in the Parrot Kindergarten group changed the properties of water by freezing and next week will conduct an experiment with their ice blocks.
Water provides meaningful learning for young children as they can test their theories about their physical world. By handling, manipulating, tasting and feeling children add knowledge to their developing concepts. As the children played, they talked about many science concepts, such as floating, sinking, soaking or bubbling. They clearly demonstrated satisfaction as they asked questions, provided explanations and modelled their learning with other peers.
