The catchphrase, ‘I made it myself’ is often recited during any typical day at Ruyton Early Learning.
Throughout the year the children demonstrate interest to initiate and extend their ideas to create, make or build in the various learning areas within the classroom and outdoors. They work with enthusiasm and purpose on their individual concepts with the materials and resources available. While they work, they often discuss their plans, theories and progress. They may comment on any changes that they need to incorporate, difficulties encountered or mistakes made. The educators provide scaffolding if the children need support to keep persisting to complete their goals.
Providing opportunities for children to make things for themselves allows them to practise their independence skills. It also promotes dispositions needed for learning, such as negotiation, thinking strategies, resilience and confidence. Children demonstrate a sense of satisfaction and acheivement when they say, ‘I made it myself’.
