The first week back to School is always exciting. For students of Chinese we also celebrated teaching and learning about the Chinese language and culture to coincide with the Chinese National Day celebration.
The School bells were changed to traditional and contemporary Chinese music and red lanterns were hung up in the Courtyard Café. Students had opportunities to participate in Chinese activities, such as flying kites, kicking shuttlecocks, paper cutting and knotting. Most memorable for us all was the singing competition for Years 3 and Year 4 students from six local schools and the Senior School Assembly on Friday, with guest speaker, Ms Clarissa Belanti, who talked to the girls about the doors opened to her as a result of her Chinese language skills.
Trinity Grammar, Carey Grammar, Camberwell Girls Grammar, Auburn South Primary, St Brigid’s Catholic School Healsville and Ruyton participated in the singing competition, which was a collaborative project initiated by Ruyton. The Years 3 and 4 Chinese programmes are new at Ruyton and we endeavour to learn from schools with successful established programmes. The Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne, the Confucius Institute of University of Melbourne and the Chinese Teachers’ Association provided sponsorship for the event.
Clarissa’s talk was definitely a highlight and inspired the girls. Her passion for learning the Chinese language and culture has enabled her to sing at the 2013 Chinese New Year Gala, attend the G20 Summit Meeting in Brisbane and the APEC meeting in Beijing as a journalist and act in a Chinese TV Series.
Key points taken from Clarissa’s talk are that language skills:
• are lifetime skills
• can open many doors
• can assist in making new friends and meeting new people
• assist to learn about different cultures and people
• widen career opportunities
• improve confidence
• can change your life.
We trust that the girls gained an insight into learning about Chinese language and culture and benefited from the activities offered.
