On Wednesday 9 November our Year 5 and 6 Ruyton Debating team competed in the annual Ruyton Trinity Debate. All of the girls were excited and also a bit nervous. The topics were Democracy is the Best Form of Government with Ruyton arguing the affirmative, and All Professional Athletes should have Equal Pay with Ruyton arguing the negative.
The debaters for the affirmative team were Mia A, Aaditri B (researcher), Juliet L and Jessie T. The debaters for the negative team were Sarah L, Georgie T and Sabine Y.
The Year 5 and 6 girls volunteered their lunchtimes to write their speeches with persuasive techniques and rebuttals. After weeks of preparation Ruyton was victorious in both debates. The nominated best speaker of the first debate was Mia A, and from the second debate was Sabine Y. All girls were amazing in both debates. The Trinity boys were also impressive and provided strong arguments against Ruyton. Each debater received encouraging and useful feedback from the two Year 11 Trinity adjudicators, who also did a great job. We are grateful to Trinity Grammar for hosting us this year and we look forward to continuing this tradition in 2017. The Trinity boys and the Ruyton girls have definitely set the bar high for next year’s debate.
