Ruyton has made a formal commitment to becoming a more sustainable school with the appointment of a Co-ordinator of Sustainability and involvement with the Resource Smart Schools Programme. In the Junior School the Green Team encourages us to conserve the environment through a number of programmes. The Green Team reduces, reuses and recycles, and we are proud of our thriving worm farm and vegetable garden. The adult-supervised Walking School Bus Routes encourage our girls to be independent, healthy, and to reduce our reliance on cars. We regularly participate in TravelSmart days.
In the Senior School a committee, led by the Sustainability Captain, plan environmentally focused activities and events. We seek to promote action where our students can make a difference on raising awareness and activism both Inside and outside Ruyton.
Ruyton is a member of the Schools Environment Tracking System (SETS) which records data about all the School’s resource useage. In 2009 Ruyton began purchasing government-accredited Green Power and every new infrastructure project undertaken considers the environmental impact and includes, where possible, energy and resource-saving initiatives. Ruyton successfully completed the Energy and Waste modules and is now classified as a ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic 2Star School.
The TravelSmart programme was introduced at Ruyton in 2007 and girls are encouraged to take public transport to School and to share lifts where possible.
